Data Structure is an innovative, interactive digital sculpture that elevates the concept of data into an architectural marvel. Spanning an impressive 45 feet in the atrium of UVA's new School of Data Science, this artwork transforms the fundamental data structure - the array - from a virtual code into a mesmerizing architectural-scale form.



Each lantern in the sculpture corresponds to an element in a one-dimensional array, creating a dynamic light display that visualizes community-sourced datasets. This a cascade of lights is a narrative of data in motion, where each dataset from the school's community choreographs a unique story in light and color, making abstract numbers and concepts visually and emotionally accessible.

Beside this towering structure is an interactive companion screen, an integral part of the experience. It serves as a guide, explaining the dataset currently animating the sculpture and offering visitors a hands-on interaction with the data. This screen bridges the gap between the observer and the artwork, turning data exploration into an engaging, personal experience.

Data Structure stands as a symbol of the School of Data Science’s mission and the power of community collaboration and its commitment to the local and global community. It transforms the atrium into a space where data is not just analyzed but felt and experienced, where the complexities of data science are made tangible, and where every visitor can witness the rhythm of data shaping our world. This sculpture is more than an art piece; it's a living, breathing representation of the vibrancy and impact of data in our lives.
